UNDRR PreventionWeb Features Lead Service Line Replacement Cost Calculator

Chicago, Illinois – December 21, 2025
Environmental & Public Health International® (EPHI) announced that its Lead Service Line Replacement Cost Calculator® (LSLRCC) has been featured on PreventionWeb, the global knowledge platform for disaster risk reduction operated by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

The editorial feature positions the LSLRCC as a preventive planning tool supporting disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation by addressing drinking water infrastructure vulnerabilities, particularly aging lead service lines that can exacerbate public health risks during climate related hazards and emergencies.

Alignment with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction

PreventionWeb links the LSLRCC to implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, highlighting the tool’s role in understanding disaster risk, strengthening governance, and supporting risk informed investment in resilient infrastructure.

By enabling transparent cost estimation and infrastructure planning, the calculator supports prevention oriented approaches that reduce underlying drivers of disaster risk, including exposure of vulnerable populations, aging assets, and investment gaps in drinking water systems.

Bridging Climate Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction

The PreventionWeb feature complements the tool’s inclusion in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Nairobi Work Programme Adaptation Knowledge Platform by extending its application into disaster risk governance and national resilience planning.

Together, these placements reflect growing recognition of drinking water infrastructure as a foundational system for climate resilience, disaster risk reduction, and public health protection.

“Reducing disaster risk begins with preventive investment in critical infrastructure,” said Anthony Ross, founder of Environmental & Public Health International. “Positioning drinking water planning within both climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction frameworks helps ensure that public health risks are addressed before emergencies occur.”

Supporting Implementation Ready Planning

The free, web based calculator is designed for use by Tribal and local governments, public water systems, planners, and funding applicants. It supports evidence based planning for lead service line replacement and facilitates alignment between public health objectives, climate adaptation strategies, and disaster risk reduction priorities.

Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals

By strengthening access to safe drinking water and supporting resilient infrastructure investment, the LSLRCC contributes to progress on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to health, clean water and sanitation, sustainable cities, and climate action, while reinforcing integrated approaches to climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction.
