UNDRR Highlights Flint Water Crisis Training as Disaster Risk Reduction Capacity Building
Training Recognized for Drinking Water Emergency Preparedness and Public Health Protection.
Press Release
Chicago, Illinois – December 24, 2025
Environmental & Public Health International® (EPHI) announced that its Flint Water Crisis: Lessons Learned online drinking water training has been featured by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) on PreventionWeb, the global knowledge platform supporting implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Recognition as a Disaster Risk Reduction and Public Health Capacity-Building Resource
The PreventionWeb listing recognizes the training as a disaster risk reduction and public health capacity-building resource focused on preventing future drinking water emergencies.
The training is delivered by Anthony Ross, Founder of Environmental & Public Health International® and former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Flint Safe Drinking Water Act Emergency Coordinator, who played a direct role in EPA’s emergency response during the Flint Water Crisis.
“The Flint Water Crisis demonstrated how regulatory failures, infrastructure risk, and breakdowns in accountability can escalate into a large-scale public health emergency,” said Ross. “This training is designed to transfer those hard lessons directly to institutions responsible for preventing future crises.”
Disaster Risk Reduction and Institutional Preparedness
The training examines the Flint Water Crisis through a disaster risk reduction lens, focusing on early warning failures, institutional decision-making, regulatory breakdowns, and emergency response shortcomings. It highlights how governance failures and infrastructure risk can escalate into large-scale public health emergencies.
Drinking Water Emergency Preparedness
Participants gain practical insight into drinking water system vulnerabilities, including corrosion control failures, lead contamination, Legionella risks, and Safe Drinking Water Act compliance and enforcement. The training strengthens preparedness by improving institutional capacity to identify risks early and respond effectively.
Public Health Protection, Accountability, and Global Risk Alignment
Led by the former EPA Flint Safe Drinking Water Act Emergency Coordinator, the training emphasizes public health protection, government accountability, and the role of institutional decision-making and community trust during drinking water emergencies.
The PreventionWeb listing positions the training within global disaster risk reduction efforts, supporting institutional capacity building consistent with the Sendai Framework and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6 on safe drinking water.
