Flint Water Crisis Training Recognized for Disaster Risk Reduction
Institutional, trade, and civic technology platforms document regulatory lessons relevant to preventing drinking water emergencies.
Press Release
Chicago, Illinois – December 26, 2025
Environmental & Public Health International® (EPHI) announced that its Flint Water Crisis Deep-Dive: Lessons Learned online training is being recognized across disaster risk reduction, civic technology, and professional platforms as a public interest capacity-building resource aligned with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The training examines how regulatory failures, infrastructure risk, and breakdowns in institutional accountability contributed to one of the most consequential public health emergencies in U.S. drinking water history.
It draws directly from the experience of Anthony Ross, former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Flint Safe Drinking Water Act Emergency Coordinator and founder of Environmental & Public Health International®.
Understanding Disaster Risk in Drinking Water Systems
The training examines how early warning failures, corrosion control gaps, and regulatory blind spots contributed to escalating risk and delayed response in the Flint water system, with relevance to disaster risk reduction practice.
Independent professional coverage, including reporting by Water Conditioning & Purification Magazine, documents how institutional decision-making and oversight failures compounded technical vulnerabilities in drinking water systems.
Strengthening Disaster Risk Governance and Institutional Capacity
Aligned with Sendai Framework Priority 2 on strengthening disaster risk governance, the training equips water professionals, regulators, and policymakers with practical insight to strengthen Safe Drinking Water Act compliance, improve risk awareness, and support more effective governance of drinking water infrastructure.
The training is also officially recognized in the Civic Tech Field Guide as a public interest capacity-building resource supporting improved public decision-making.
Recognition Across Disaster Risk Reduction and Public Health Platforms
The Flint Water Crisis training is featured on the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction’s global knowledge platform, PreventionWeb, where it is positioned as a disaster risk reduction and public health capacity-building resource.
“Training that strengthens institutional understanding of risk, governance, and accountability is essential to preventing cascading public health impacts from infrastructure failures,” said Ross. “PreventionWeb provides an important platform for sharing these resources with practitioners working to reduce disaster risk and protect communities.”
Prior Professional and Sector Coverage
The training program has also been documented by environmental and water sector publications, including Inside Ecology and The Driller, in reporting on its development, scope, and relevance to drinking water workforce capacity building.
