Harvard University–Boston University Climate and Health Platform Lists Lead Service Line Replacement Cost Calculator

Environmental & Public Health International® (EPHI) announced that its Lead Service Line Replacement Cost Calculator® (LSLRCC) has been included in a national climate and health educational resource collection supporting research, training, and capacity building at the intersection of climate change and public health.

The collection is coordinated through the Climate and Health Research Coordinating Center (RCC), a collaboration between the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH), established with support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The listing places drinking water infrastructure planning alongside climate-sensitive health research, recognizing lead service line replacement as a measurable intervention for reducing climate-amplified exposure risks and protecting public health.

Climate and Health Research and Education

The educational resource collection is managed through the Climate and Health Community of Practice coordinated by the BUSPH-HSPH RCC, which supports interdisciplinary research, education, and capacity-building efforts at the interface of climate science and public health.

Inclusion of the LSLRCC reflects growing recognition within academic and research communities that drinking water systems are climate-sensitive public health infrastructure requiring transparent, data-driven planning tools.

Drinking Water Infrastructure as a Climate and Health Intervention

Rising temperatures and seasonal variability can increase dissolved lead release from aging service lines, elevating exposure risks. The LSLRCC enables Tribal and local governments, utilities, and educators to model replacement costs, support compliance with the U.S. EPA Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, and advance equity-focused infrastructure investment.

By supporting standardized cost modeling and scenario analysis, the tool contributes to evidence-based planning that aligns climate adaptation, public health protection, and long-term infrastructure resilience.

The educational listing aligns with the LSLRCC’s broader recognition across international climate and sustainability platforms, including its association with climate adaptation and resilience planning under global frameworks addressing public health, environmental equity, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
